DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1:  TANA

Arriving at Ivato international airport, meet Ortour representative and transfer to Anjary Hotel (midrange) or at the hotel Louvre (top) for overnight.

Early transfer to airport for flight to Diego Suarez, unique port on the northern tip of the island. Depart for the beautiful and lush national park of Montagne d’Ambre. Enjoy a late afternoon and evening walk, dinner and overnight at Hotel Jardin Exotique (midrange) or at Grand Hotel (top) for overnight.

Day 3: DIEGO - AMBER MOUNTAIN

Early drive to Montagne D’Ambre. The national park of the amber Mountain spreads on 23,010 ha of which 18,200 ha for the National Park and 4,810 ha for the Reserve Special Forest of amber. It is a volcanic massif covered of forest spreading on 850 to 1,475 m. Six lakes and several streams and rivers furrow the park.

Montagne d’Ambre is where you can find the Amber mountain rock thrush endemic in the area.

The Amber Mountain is a high place of endemicity with 77 species of birds, seven species of lemurs and 24 species of amphibian. Spend the rest of the night at the Monastère Lodge (midrange) or Nature Lodge (top)

Day 4: AMBER MOUNTAIN - ANKARANA

In the morning, leave Montagne d’Ambre and drive to Ankarana Reserve. The park of Ankarana spreads over 18,225 ha. Ankarana is the western extension of a chalky massif of the medium Jurassic that emerges from a basaltic plain located above 50m over the sea level. The plateau, that is a greatly eroded karst formation in surface, is constituted by a lapiaz of Tsingy.

Full day visit in the park, Ankarana is home to many species of lemurs such as the crowned lemurs, Sanford’s brown lemurs and different species of birds. Also, it is mostly known for its limestone pinnacles or the Tsingy. The biological inventories of Ankarana reported 50 herpetofauna species with 40 reptiles and 10 amphibians, also reported 96 species of birds, 50 species of mollusks and a huge number of snails of the tsingy. 14 species of bats, either the half of the bats of Madagascar lives in the underground cave of Ankarana. Overnight at Chez Aurelien (midrange) or at Relais d’Ankarana (high midrange)

 

Day 6: ANKARANA - VOHEMAR

We leave very early in the morning to Vohemar through one of worst road of the island (167km). Called in Madagascar Iharana, Vohemar is located in the north-east of Madagascar in the region of SAVA, famous for its cultivation of vanilla reputation. But the road between Ambilobe and Vohemar is very bad. Daraina located 50 km north of Vohemar on the road Diego-Suarez. Despite its modest size, is full of green forests Daraina surroundings. Being located in the northeast of the island, the humidity of the region is sometimes important, so it is best to go in the dry season from May to November. The nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts will find them, since Daraina is the starting point for fantastic hikes in the forest. The forests of the village are also the only sanctuary of Propithecus Tattersal Sifaka or golden-crowned. You may like to approach it in the forest Bekaraoka, thirty minutes from the village. Further south, the forest contains a dense Binari incredible diversity of fauna, reptiles, birds, golden-crowned Propithecus, etc. The site also houses a sacred waterfall and it is difficult not to be tempted by a swim in its natural pool.

Day 7: VOHEMAR - SAMBAVA

After breakfast, morning drive to go to Sambava. Sambava is a good point to start a trip to Marojejy special reserve. In the area, it is very famous for its exporting products such as vanilla, and coffee.  Stay at Orchidéa (midrange) or at Las palmas (high midrange)

Day 8: SAMBAVA - MAROJEJY

Drive from Sambava to the National park of Marojejy.

marojejy-madagascar-national-parkThe National Park of Marojejy spreads on 60 050 Ha, in the region of the Sava, a new demarcation of this protected area is in progress to bring it back to 55 500 ha. It is an altitude park that can reach up to 2132m. Marojejy is dominated by an immense mountain and much damaged forest reliefs. It is a very complex shape landscape where crests and stiff slopes follow each other.  Camping or stay in the small bungalow

Day 9-10: MAROJEJY

Full day visit at the park, Marojejy conceals numerous interesting species: 115 species of birds, 11 species of lemurs. We can also meet 148 species of reptiles and amphibians, 16 of which are endemic to the giant mountain. Marojejy contains only 33% of the species of reptiles and amphibians known in Madagascar.

Day 11: MAROJEJY - ANTALAHA

Leave in the morning and go to Antalaha where you could enjoy its splendid beach just close right where the forest meet the ocean. The town of Antalaha is the capital of SAVA region; it is a lovely place, highly recommended for few days relax.  Stay at hotel Ocean Momo (midrange / top)

Day 12: ANTALAHA - TANA

Take a flight back to Tana.
